A Message from our Chief Executive Officer

Dear friends,

As is our nation’s tradition during the month of May, we honor the mothers and influential women in our lives for whom we are grateful.

In that spirit, I would like to take this opportunity to celebrate the dedicated and impassioned women who volunteer their time and energy to serve as Big Sisters to the Little Sisters in our programs. Their willingness to give of both their time and energy to mentor, guide, influence, and positively help shape the life of a young girl can only be described as extraordinary. Like many of our own mothers have done with us, they are leaving a legacy through their efforts, and it is inspiring to reflect on the impact that they make each day on the future generations.

We know that all our Bigs make a profound impact on the lives of our Littles every day. We are indebted to their service and honored to work with them because our incredible mentors remain to be the critical distinction between children realizing their full potential and those who struggle to succeed.

But our work is not done.

In fact, at any given day, it is reported that there are over half a million children living in poverty in New York City alone. This is a reality that has several implications for families and children. It means that parents have to work several jobs just to make ends meet. It means that some children are not afforded certain opportunities in life. And it complicates what should be simple, happy childhoods.

As more children are growing up without the proper stability and support, the need for mentors has never been greater. And so this May, in honor of the women in your life who have cared for you growing up, consider becoming a mentor to a child in need. I promise you that the impact of doing so will be profound – for both you and your Little.

Regards,

Hector Batista
